University of Huddersfield

Huddersfield, England

www.hud.ac.uk

Huddersfield University began teaching games in 2003 making us one of the longest established courses in the UK. Our approach to teaching is what sets us apart; we know that the games industry wants grads that know how games are made and therefore we do everything we can to give our students opportunities to make games and prototype their ideas. We run our team projects as game jams, bringing programmers, designers, artists and musicians together to make prototype games. In final year this becomes a vertical slice of a game that has commercial viability.

To further bolster this ethos, we have an inhouse games studio that has been running since 2006 where we pay students on their placement year to make a commercially released game every year. For the entrepreneurs amongst you, we have a commercial business enterprise space where teams of students can form their own business in both placement year or post-graduation. All of this has led us to have won more prizes in art and design at Grads in Games than any other university, along with being awarded two out of three of their teaching excellence awards.
