Studio Spotlight 2020: DPS Games
Grads In Games have been working with members of DPS Games since almost the very beginning, with the studio a frequent partner, collaborator and supporter across its previous iterations. It’s a pleasure to welcome back the DPS Games team as a studio partner once again this year!
Originally branded as Wargaming UK – and part of the company behind the “World of Tanks” franchise – DPS Games is currently working on its first major AAA title, an exciting unannounced free-to-play within new IP.
In line with the studio’s incredible growth since the acquisition of Edge Case Games in 2018, DPS Games is now home to over 94 team-members and has doubled its office space in the past year. And that growth is not limited to Guildford, with the team already establishing their overseas operations in Australia with 70 team members, and they are looking to expand to other global games hubs in future.
Studio Head Sean Decker, who has spearheaded the rebrand and renewed direction of the studio, said: ‘At DPS Games, we still remain a proud member of the Wargaming family – intrinsically linked through infrastructure, ecosystems and community. That said, our games will be very different – and our players will be, too. Together, we’ve faced many challenges, but we’ve had a huge amount of fun along the way. It is this journey of passion and play that has forged DPS Games, and here, play is everything.’
The studio sees employees embody the mantra of “Play is Everything” – with the space alive with the buzz of playtests and lunchtime tabletop showdowns. The office features themed meeting spaces, with an 8-bit arcade room as well as a medieval dungeon themed room. Staff are encouraged to explore all aspects of hobbydom; miniature painting stations are available for wargamers, as well as a collection of board-games for staff to borrow. Every Friday afternoon staff are encouraged to playtest games classic and contemporary. After-hours you may even run-into one of the company’s LAN parties or split-screen tournament.
A uniting force within the fabric of DPS Games is creating games that are Deep, Now and Awesome. The aim is threefold: to allow players to dive into their games and keep finding surprises years after release, create games that are relevant and cutting-edge, and – importantly – creating amazing moments that players will remember forever.
‘After watching the incredible growth of the studio in Guildford over the past two years, we at Wargaming are excited to see DPS Games take shape and expand the influence of Wargaming in new parts of the world. This is an experienced team of industry veterans and rising stars who are growing by the day, and we are eager to watch them bring something new and distinctive to the free-to-play market’ said Victor Kislyi, CEO of Wargaming.
Deep, Now and Awesome not only describes the games that DPS Games creates. It describes the people they work with, and the careers that they forge.
