Studio Spotlight 2020: Sumo Digital
Sumo Digital have had a huge impact on Grads In Games and Search For A Star, as one of the key studio partners across our initiatives for several years now.
With their own Sumo Digital Academy and internship programmes, they’re also one of the more progressive studios when it comes to supporting the next generation of games developers, so we’re very proud to have them as a studio partner once again.
Founded in 2003, award-winning Sumo Digital employs over 750 staff across nine studios in Sheffield, Nottingham, Newcastle, Brighton (The Chinese Room), Leeds (Red Kite Games), Leamington Spa (Sumo Leamington and Lab42), Warrington, UK and Pune, India.
Developing successful games across all platforms and genres, Sumo is recognised for its versatility, proprietary technology and creativity across a portfolio of games featuring titles for major publishers including Microsoft, Sony, Sega and 2K.
Sumo’s development work covers all major gaming platforms, and they produce critically acclaimed games enjoyed by all with incredible franchises such as Team Sonic Racing, LittleBigPlanet and more recently Hotshot Racing. They’re currently working on a variety of AAA projects across all studios, including the recently announced next-gen titles Sackboy: A Big Adventure, and Hood: Outlaws & Legends.
Sumo treat their teams well too and provide a range of activities including internal game jams, regular (now virtual!) socials, sports, gaming events, yoga, and life drawing classes to name a few! They also offer all employees 5 learning days a year to focus on their own development and interests.
Studios within Sumo Digital have had the honour of winning multiple awards over the years, all thanks to the skills and enthusiasm of our incredibly talented teams! Some of our most recent awards include:
- MCV/DEVELOP 2020 – External Development Partner of the Year
- TIGA 2019 – Best Independent Studio
- Develop:Star Awards 2019 – Best Studio
- Sheffield Digital Awards 2019 – Best Video Game – Crackdown 3
Sumo Digital believe in harnessing and developing future talent and supporting graduate hires through Grads in Games, and the Search for a Star initiative has been a great way for them to do this!
