Games VFX Projects | SFASX
Since we first launched the Games VFX challenge in 2017, it’s been a struggle to get a large number of entrants. VFX for games isn’t something that most universities cover and there’s only a few that really go into any detail on games-specific VFX. As a result, it’s also one of the few areas where games studios are desperate for more skilled graduate devs.
Because of this, it’s excellent to see so many projects for 2020. 15 projects may not seem like much, but for such an often barren area of student gamedev, this is massive 😀
For their projects, students were asked to create a short chain of game-ready effects that would form a sequence, similar to what you would typically find in a game scene. This sequence would move from an idle/charge state through to a release and recovery, before looping back to its original starting state.
This year we have a great range of projects too! From Elie Van Ravels’ multi-part magic shield, Palagamsan Sivapathasundaram‘s colourful projectile orb, through to Steinar Hølland‘s terrifying soul steal effect, there’s some really fantastic entries!
